Buttons link to the newest release on GitHub. If a button does not fill in with a version number, open the release page and choose the file from the list under Assets. Windows on ARM (Snapdragon laptops) is also available there as windows-arm64.

Not sure which Mac you have? Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. If it says Chip: Apple M… choose Apple silicon. If it says Processor: Intel… choose Intel.

What happens next

  1. Run the installer. On Windows, double-click the .exe. On a Mac, open the .dmg and drag Commander4j to Applications; the first time you open it, right-click the app and choose Open because the installer is not signed with Apple. On Linux, run sh Commander4j_….sh.
  2. Have a database ready. Commander4j stores its data in Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle. On Windows the free SQL Server Express is the usual choice. The install guide walks through it.
  3. Run Setup4j from the Commander4j program group to point the application at your database and let it create the tables.
  4. Log in with the default user and change the password.

Companion applications

Only needed when you connect to an ERP or drive automatic labellers. Each installs the same way as Commander4j and normally lives on a server rather than an operator's PC.

Looking for the scanner web application? It ships with each Commander4j release as c4j_commander4j_web.war under Assets and is deployed to an Apache Tomcat server by whoever looks after your IT. The smaller tools on the home page each link to their own download page.
